![]() Chameleon I386 Folder S Software On ItOh I hope you are not using a Compaq with Dell software on it basically they do not work too well together. Its rare that you need it for normal application or device driver installations. There is a lot of stuff in the dell folder you can get rid of, I believe you can uninstall many of the useful applications dell provides and free up some of that space. Instead of trying to coach someone through putting the correct CD in the drive (and not all Dells are shipped with media--you have to ask for it on some) and then navigating the CD, they can tell you the proper sequence of menus and mouse clicks to get to the file they want you to use in short order. The Dell folder has files for links to the Dell part of the Windows Help and Support on the Start Menu. As for every Windows computer having a C:i386 folder (as on the Dell), my desktop with a retail install of XP does not. There is a Windows RootDriver Cachei386 folder, and System RoodSystem32ReinstallBackups0000DriverFilesi386 folder(s, 0001, 0002, etc.), but no C:i386. So, if you have the Dell media CDs (OS and Drivers), you can safely delete the C:i386 folder. It contains the same files as the i386 folder on the Windows XP CD. Its basically just a handy tool for the phone tech support folks at Dell. Looks like a deliberate attempt to screw up someones computer. Have your XP CD handy, then go to Start Run and type sfc scannow. This site is completely free -- paid for by advertisers and donations.
